¡Buenos días!

Esta mañana he estado revolviendo fotos viejas en el ordenador y en mi expedición me he topado con un par de carpetas de viajes que he hecho hace tiempo, así que he decidido ¿por qué no empezar una sección del blog de viajes? Empezaría por enseñar viajes que he hecho hace tiempo, hablando un poco sobre cada sitio al que he estado (que son un par de ellos), recomendaciones… ¿Qué os parece?

Bueno, para hoy tengo un viaje que me marcó muchísimo. Hace dos veranos, en 2011, me concedieron la beca de idiomas del MEC y decidí irme a Berlín 3 semanas a perfeccionar el alemán.  ¡Vaya experiencia! Conocí a gente fantástica que me enriqueció muchísimo, pulí mi alemán y lo más importante, me recorrí de arriba abajo una de las capitales más cosmopolitas de Europa. Lo que puede diferenciar Berlín de otras capitales europeas es que su historia está fuera, en la calle. No se oculta en catedrales o museos, vas caminando y ahí va: una lección de historia al aire libre.

Las fotos que os voy a enseñar pretenden ser una muestra de lo que vi y respiré durante esas 3 semanas y logré captar con el objetivo. ¡Espero que os gusten!

Good morning!

I’ve been going through old photographs this morning and in my quest I’ve bumped into folders full of my travelling potos, from trips I went to some time ago, so I thought why not make a section in this blog about travelling? I’m going to start with some older trips, talking a bit about the places I’ve been to (which are a few), recomendations… What do you think?

Well, for today I have a trip that was a real life changer. Two summers ago I got a scholarship to study languages abroad in the summer, so I decided to spend 3 weeks of July in Berlin. What an experience! I met amazing people who enriched me in all levels, I polished my German and the most important part is I walked up and down one of the most cosmopolite european capitals. What differs Berlin from any other european city is the fact that their history is out there, on the street, not hidden in a museum or in cathedrals. You can be walking down the street and there it goes: a history lesson in the fresh air.

The photos I’m posting today are meant to  show what I saw and breathed during those 3 weeeks and managed to capture with my camera. Hope you like them!

Monumento al Holocausto. Es un conjunto de bloques de hormigón en memorial de los judíos Asesinados en Europa durante la II Guerra Mundial. La sensación al pasear entre esos bloques de diferentes alturas es increíble, te sientes insignificante en comparación con la grandeza de los hechos que representa. Está en el centro de la ciudad también. 

Holocaust Monument. It's a group of cement blocks to commemorate the jews that were killed in Europe during World War II. The feeling walking through those different sized blocks was amazing, you feel insignificant compared to the greatness of the history it represents. It's in the middle of town.

Por supuesto, el Muro de Berlín es un must. 

Of course the Berlin wall is a must see. 

La isla de los Museos, donde se encuentra, entre muchos, el famoso Museo Pérgamo, que vale la pena visitar. 

Museum Island, where you can find, amongst other, the Pergamon Museum, it's worth visiting!

Otra parada obligatoria es el campo de concentración de Sachsenhausen. Parece estar envuelto por un aura gris bastante espeluznante, pero fue una experiencia fascinante. Recorrí todo el campo con un audio guía que iba comentando cada espacio y la verdad que ayuda a imaginarte (dentro de lo posible) la situación que se vivió durante el régimen nazi. 

Another must see is the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. It has a feeling of being surrounded by a grey aura which is kind of creepy, but it was an amazing experience. I walked around the whole camp with an audio guide that talked about each space and it did help a lot to have a slight idea of the situation the people lived in during the nazi period. 

Algo más colorido y alegre es Tacheles,  una galería de arte moderno diferente a cualquier otra, ya que la llevan un grupo de ocupas. Hacen exhibiciones y es un lugar para pasar un rato agradable y estar con gente alternativa. 

Moving on to something more colorful, we've got Tacheles, a modern art gallery, different to any other. You can see exhibitions and it's a nice place to hang out with alternative people. 

Otro de los lugares que visité fue Potsdam, a las afueras de Berlín, donde se encuentra el Palacio de Sanssouci,  el palacio de verano oficial de Federico II el Grande, Rey de Prusia. Recuerda mucho a Versailles, con jardines interminables y un decorado rococó. 

Another place I visited was Potsdam, where the Sanssouci Palace is, Frederic II the Great's official summer palace. It is very similar to Versailles, with never ending gardens and a rococo decor. 

Otro de los rasgos característicos de Berlín es lo alternativo de sus calles, además de sus habitantes. Caminando por Mitte te puedes encontrar de todo, y en el contraste de lo nuevo y lo viejo está la belleza de esta capital. 

One of the words we could use to describe Berlin is it being alternative, its streets and people. Walking through Mitte you can see everything and anything, and the contrast between new and old is where the beauty of this city relies. 

Para hacer unas buenas compras está la famosa Friedrichstrasse, donde están todas las grandes marcas, además de las Galerías La Fayette, que son asombrosas. 

To do some good shopping you can go to Friedrichstrasse, where you will find the big brand names and also La Fayette Galleries, which are amazing. 

La Puerta de Brandenburgo y la plaza de París es parada obligatoria. También se encuentra ahí el famoso hotel donde Michael Jackson asomó a su hijo por la ventana. 

Brandenburg Gate and the Paris square is also a must see. It's where Michael Jackson took his son out of the window. 

El Museo Judío de Berlín también es fascinante. Toda la historia en un mismo edificio. 

The Jewish Museum is also fascinating. All the history in one building.
